Recommended Reads
Within Year 5, we aim to promote a love of reading for all pupils and encourage children to try reading books by a different author. The books within the Year 5 recommended reading list are age appropriate and are full of rich reading material. We have many books in our Year 5 library and within the school library too.
English
In Year 5, we integrate writing and reading within our projects and provide opportunities for the children to apply their writing skills within a variety of different genres of writing: narratives, poetry, brochures and scientific reports. They enjoy looking at different types of writing and generating their own creative ideas for their own writing. Our whole class reading texts are matched to our projects and children enjoy choosing their own reading books within our Year 5 library and the main school library.
Maths
In Maths, we plan and deliver a challenging Maths approach, where we encourage children to think and reason mathematically. This will ensure they become confident and fluent mathematicians who use maths as a tool to access many areas throughout their lives.
Year 5 Maths
Calculation Policy
Maths Sequence of Learning Progression
This is Maths information specific for Year 5. The Calculation Policy demonstrates how calculations are taught; the Maths Sequence of Learning shows the progression of strands across the year, what is taught when and for how long and specific learning that children will be experiencing. For further information regarding whole school Calculation Policies, Strand Progression and Sequence of Learning Progressions, please see the Maths Subject Area on our website here.
We also use Power Maths. In the Power up, children will recap key knowledge and concepts that have been previously taught. In the Discover part of the Maths lesson, children grapple and try new mathematical problems. The teacher will share different methods and strategies the children have used to solve mathematical problems. As part of the think together part of the lesson, children and teachers work together to try more challenging mathematical problems before the children try independent questions, with a range of fluency, reasoning and problem solving questions.
Year 5 Trips and Outcomes
In Year 5, we become scientists in the project, Chemical Chaos and we visit Winchester Science Centre. This trip will engage the children by giving them up to 100 hands-on opportunities to explore scientific principles. In addition to this, it will support the children when leading their scientific investigations, publishing their explanations and running their own science fair.
We have some outcomes that parents are welcome to join us for:
- Chemical chaos science fair
- My Many Coloured Days Art Exhibition
